Step one to freedom…

It’s that day, the day where a whole bunch of 16- year-old teens stand in line for an hour for the test. The test that will determine if they can start on the journey to freedom; getting their G1 license. Today I went through that exact test. It was a lot easier than I expected, I think a lot of the reason teens get so nervous for this test is because they hear the countless number of “horror stories” of people having tro rewrite ther test 3- 4 times before they pass.

Fortunately for me.. I passed. And now begins the fun of learning to drive.

An MMA Seminar in London

So this past weekend I had an opportunity to go cover a story with a good friend of mine in London Ontario. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity it’s a great opportunity to network and learn some new things.

So my friend Christina, Christine and myself all headed out on Friday. It was interesting considering we were heading into “Snow belt country”. We stayed at the Delta Armories which is huge. It’s a  20 floor  hotel with a pool and a hot tub a 24- hour gym and a children’s play area.

Friday night we went out for dinner and then went back to the hotel to relax a little. Bright and early Saturday morning– what? Okay not early, 10′o clock isn’t early. We headed down to John Paul II Secondary School for the seminar. Jeff Joslin was up first( while Christina and Christine were  on the mats I was going around taking video and photos.)   Up next, was Olympic coach Dave Mair and then it was lunch time.

We headed down to a Farmer’s Market and got some awesome munchies.

We then headed back for the last half of the day… with Mark Hominick and  Chris Hordecki.

Christina suggested that I interview those two, so I  did. It was really interesting considering  my limited knowledge of  MMA. See Christina and Christine both train in this sport whereas I just happen to know what I see and hear from fighters.  I had two really good interviews but the one that I felt really delved to get information was the interview with Horedecki. I felt like I was really able to get into his world.

I also interviewed  Tony Lee about his first professional fight and that was also an enlightening interview.

So nonetheless I wrote an article on the event which was posted on MMA Canada.

Anyways,  it was quite the experience to interview these fighters and get to know what they  feel whenever they enter the ring.

And the boredom begins…

So I just finished my internship at a radio station about 2 weeks ago. I was kept so busy for the entire month of May I was looking forward to having a break but I quickly found out I was entirely bored. I’ve had a job which I only work one day a week for 3.5 hours a day since I was fourteen( might I add when I took the job I was working five hours a week and it worked perfectly but two years later they cut my hours.) Well, since I was in school I didn’t take on any other job until the summer– see I have a summer job lined up at the YMCA but it’s unfortunate that my hours aren’t guaranteed the joy of being on-call. So, nonetheless, I’ve been job hunting I think I’ve put a resume into every store in Eastgate Square. I’ve had a few interviews and  what looked to have awesome potential but I don’t think I want to sign away a year of my life to a company that I might not actually have to give.

So today after I finally moved my butt out of bed( it’s the heat I swear) I went downstairs to get some food and I scored a job interview at a place that I put my resume into just last week. So anyways, here’s hoping.

I need something to do so I have no problem with working all week, I mean I love spending time with my friend’s and boyfriend but there’s only so much a girl can handle before she starts to go insane.

So, I definitely have been out a lot lately to keep busy but this heat I believe it’s like 33 degrees here.. is preventing me from going to far. I think if I keep up the walking at the rate I’m going I won’t have legs left– okay I’ll have legs left but they’ll be pure muscle… might scare some people just a bit.

So off I go to get ready for my interview… wish me luck.

Until next time… keep cool

.:)

One chapter ends and another one begins…

Once, again I’m at another fork in the road on the path of life. I’ve just finished my second -year of college and should be graduating pending my internship panning  out.  I remember it wasjust two years ago that the same feeling of uneasiness and excitement washed over me as I left the safety and comfort of high school to test the unknown waters of post-secondary education.

Once again, I’m leaving comfort behind to enter the big unknown world known as” the real world”.  For the past fourteen years of my life, all I’ve been is a student. My life has consisted of meeting deadlines, studying, and trying not to stress out. Now, I’ve decided to take a year off and try to make it in big world. Pending that doesn’t work– I’ll return to school.

I’m super excited though, I guess I’m like a little bird excited to spread her wings. Either way this will be quite the journey.

Can Women cope in a man’s world?

Everyone thinks the world had come really far due to the women’s rights movement since women had the right to vote. Yes, women certainly have come a long way but yet they still seem to have a hard time getting the rights and the fair treatment they deserve.

Women have the right to vote, can work, drive and do anything else a man can do, yet when women go into a career field mostly male dominated they seem to face a lot of obstacles. There are certain fields women aren’t taken very seriously in like law enforcement. Many people think that a woman police officer wouldn’t be able to the job right since they are so much smaller and often not as intimidating as a man can be.

I don’t think that’s true women can do anything a man can do and a woman in a man’s world just has to  work that much harder to prove oneself.

Here’s one of the stories I covered this year… any comments feel free to leave them. I hope you enjoy!!

The Complications of not having your driver’s license

So, I originally posted this blog last night Roz, but for some reason it’s not here now. So, I’m reposting it. I did this blog on the problems one has when applying for your license with the graduated driving system.

Social Stigmas

The issue of homelessness and mental illness are often accepted as they are along with the social stigmas that come along with it. I recently started making a documentary on the issue and decided to share some of the stereotypes with you and the things that I’ve discovered about the two issues.

Web 2.0

Is it the way of the future or are we going to move away from this type of  technology completely? Personally, I think Web 2.0 opens a wide array of new tools for  people to use. Everything  is pretty interactive and  programs like del.icio.us  are more useful since you can access your bookmarks anywhere.

On the other hand, I find sites like Twitter  useless. Everyone I talk to is on Facebook and I can update my status on my cell when I’m out same as you can do on Twitter. Other than for this course, I doubt I will ever use the site again. Digg is a great site for us to use, since it allows us to write out own headlines and really allows users access to online content.

Web 2.0 is definetely the way of the future. You can  find more people online and a lot of journalists are learning how to adapt to this new form of communication. Since a lot of bloggers are citizen journalists it is proven that people want a say in what’s going on in the world around them. Anyways, I’m getting off  track so back to web 2.0.

I’m not going to lie, adapting to new technology has it’s glitches and it’s downfalls. Quite frankly, I don’t get the point of Twitter. Why have one site completely dedicated to knowing what one’s doing?

Sorry, I find FaceBook  more appealing since you can see pictures, statuses, blogs( notes) of all your friends. This social networking site is clean and is the least complicated of all the sites I’ve joined. I’ve tried Myspace, and several others but the one that I seemed to have the best grasp of  remains to be Facebook. Prior to the Online Journalism class  i had taken second semester of my first year in this program I had not tried any other social nework beyond Myspace. This course opened my eyes to the wide platform of social networks that were   available.

These programs are awfully buggy and don’t like to always co-operate with what you’re trying to do.

In given time, I feel that web 2.0 will be a lot more user friendly. Due to the fact that it’s relatively new there are quite a few glitches still. Once, users get used to the new interactive technology I think people will really like it and adapt very well.

http://www.sitepronews.com/archives/2007/jun/18.html This site seems to agree that web 2.0 is the way of the future and isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

I look forward to exploring these networks and getting more familiar with Web 2.0 and experiencing all it has to offer.
